Happy National Long-Term Care Month!
November 20, 2024
November is National Long-Term Care Month. This was created in 2001 to bring awareness to Long Term Care resources, costs and planning for the future, and to honor those who are dedicated to serving those in a long-term care setting.
A 24-hour nursing facility is made up of a number of departments to ensure safety and that all basic needs are being met. These departments include licensed nursing and aide staff, dietary, activities, housekeeping and laundry, therapy services, and administrative roles. Each department plays a vital role in caring for the residents, even those behind the scenes.
When asking staff what they enjoy most about working in long term care, here are some of their responses:
“I loved working long-term care because of the relationships I formed with my residents. They became family and friends, not just a resident in a building. Hearing about their lives and what they did prior to coming to the facility were some of my favorite memories. I’ve met some of the best people through working in long-term care.”
“The thing I love about working long-term care is the ability to get to know the residents and their families. We get to experience joy and heartache with them. We see them at their worst and their best. We are on their team and constantly encourage them to do better. It’s like being part of an extended family.”
“There are so many reasons why I have stayed in the nursing home field for 30 years. I have always loved helping others, no matter if it is assisting with bathing or eating, or simply putting their shoes on, it is a simple thing to me, but a big thing to them. I love seeing the residents smile, making them laugh, and hearing their stories about their past. I especially love being able to be there for them when family cannot and holding their hands when they just need support.”
Deciding to make a nursing facility your home, or recognizing it is no longer safe for your loved one to reside by themselves, is an incredibly difficult decision. However, this does not mean that life is over, it just means that it will now look and feel different. We are behind each resident to support them through the ups and downs. Each resident that comes to Waterview is gaining friends and family. We are the lucky ones, that we get the opportunity to get to know each story that walks through our building.
